The Perfect Prenatal Smoothie Recipe

August 31, 2020

There were times during pregnancy that I found it too difficult to eat. Occasionally I felt like my baby was taking up so much room, that I didn’t have any space for a full meal in there. Other times I was simply too nauseous to get much down. Sometimes I was just so tired, and so tired of being hungry, that drinking something just seemed like a better option.

Smoothies, simple ones, are easy to put together, and can really deliver a lot of nutrition with relative comfort for mamas-to-be who find themselves in those too hot/too big/too queasy/too tired to eat moments.

This peach smoothie is one of my favorites and has tons of pregnancy perks. Peaches have vitamin C and fiber (and are all around delicious!), boosting immune health and gut health. I love putting a banana in here too for the creamy texture and the hit of potassium which helps with muscle cramping that can occur during pregnancy. Coconut cream contributes additional creaminess and is naturally high in lauric acid, which can stimulate milk production during pregnancy and postpartum. Not to mention, coconut oil which is anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory. This super-smoothie also contains raw ginger, a powerful aid in fighting that queasy belly!

I refuse to call it morning sickness because it happens all day long for so many of us and it may sound simple, but one other benefit not to take for granted here is hydration! Did you know that blood volume increases 30-50% during pregnancy? We need to be drinking a lot of water to keep things moving in there! So the next time you find yourself hungry and thirsty and yet reluctant to eat much of anything, grab this smoothie, mama!

Peach-Ginger Smoothie:

1 peach, cut into 1-2” pieces (skin on!)

1/2 banana

2 Tablespoons coconut cream or milk

1/4 teaspoon freshly grated ginger

1 cup ice cubes

Splash of juice (any kind) or milk (any kind)

Blend all ingredients in the blender until smooth and creamy. Sip and relax!
